We all have opinions and should be open to others’ opinions on specific topics. I thought I could talk about some bookish opinions and my views that nobody asked for, but it’s my blog, so I can do whatever I want. 🙂 <3. I found these online, so let’s go through them together.
- Book covers shouldn’t change to a new cover after adaptations to fit the movie/show:
- I agree with this because I strongly dislike real people on book covers. They take away the whimsy of the book. Most of the books with picture covers are ugly. It feels like the fiction part of the books is taken away. I loved the A Good Girls Guide to Murder Trilogy and saw a cover with the series picture on it. It felt so out of place since the show differed significantly from the books. But at the end of the day, despite my previous words, it’s not that deep.Â
- Sometimes the books aren’t good but the characters and concepts are:
- I agree with this, and I think it comes down to the fact that sometimes the writing and the plot lack luster. Sometimes, the characters are amazing, show very human emotions, and are written very well, but the plot is where it goes wrong. The idea and the concepts of the story can be developed very nicely, but the plot helps them in no way.Â
- Separate the art from the artist:
- I wholeheartedly disagree with this one. The author’s words and beliefs are what appear in the books. When you support someone who has done or said bad things, you are contributing your hard-earned money to that person.
- Annotating/tabbing books ruins them:
- I have mixed opinions about this because I have tabbed some of my books but use underlining stickers and pencils. But it really does bother me when people use pens and highlighters. It also makes me wonder how they are not bleeding through the pages. In my Percy Jackson books and Heroes of Olympus books, I wrote little notes on the sides that express how I feel, and I don’t see this as disrespecting my books and loving them as much as I can.Â
- Dual POV sucks it makes the book less interesting:
- I disagree with this, and this is a personal preference, but I love reading about how different characters feel. Sometimes, too many POVs spoil the story. Having two POVs is fun and provides a variety of interesting aspects to the books.
- 100% promoting a book by tropes sucks:
- I agree with this because the tropes are the most minor parts of the book, and although they are helpful while figuring out if you want to read that book, I think that basing the promotion of the book on tropes is very booktok and bookstagram and they can be misleading. For example, when The Cruel Prince was said to be an enemies-to-lover now, people say it is probably the smallest part of the book. They can sometimes be misleadingÂ
- modern dialogue/references ruins the bookÂ
- I have mixed opinions about this because it truly depends on the genre. If it’s a full-on fantasy book and then uses modern slang, it draws you out of the story. If it’s set in a fantasy world that’s not really our own, why add our slang to make it their own? If the fantasy is set in our world, like magic or mythology, it fits in well since the characters are modern people. I recently read Better Than The Movies, and I loved it. The references in the book are one of my favorite parts of it. All in all, I think it truly is dependent on the writing.
- The world of ‘I’m a book reading person who reads books’ merchandise, memes, etc. is cringe:Â
- I agree with this because the merch is super in your face, and the designs are super cringy, with bizarre quotes that no one says or uses in the book community. When you have it on in the real world, it just feels super out of place. There are some very subtle ones that are really cute, but most of them are very heavily BookTok-based.
- Â Hardcover books are just not as good as paperback:
- I have mixed opinions about this because I love special editions and think they should be hardcovers. However, when reading a book, I love having it malleable in my hands and folding it in whichever way I want. So, my preference is paperbacks for reading and hardbacks for collecting limited/special editions.
- Not every book you read needs to be a great example of literature:Â
- I agree with this because although reading books of various genres is good, reading fun, unserious books is good. Not every book has to have deep meaning for it to be a good book. Sometimes, the best books are the most fun books that don’t take themselves too seriously or have you question what it means to be a human. Sometimes people get pretentious about reading and think ohh, only reading classics and philosophical books or non-fiction makes you a real reader, but that is entirely false. Reading books that you like and you have fun while reading makes you a reader.
Well, that’s the end of bookish opinions. These are just my views on these topics and not everyone has to agree to my views on this. Alright! See you elsewhere in my blog.
Gonna go organize by bookshelf (defnitley not by color).
